Teen charged with 2011 murder

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- A 19-year-old New Haven man has been charged with home invasion and felony murder.

Tashaun Fair, who was on probation, was arrested Tuesday night for the March 24, 2011 murder of 23-year-old Mitchell Dubey.

Fair appeared before a judge on Wednesday, where his bond was maintained at $3 million.

Dubey was shot in the chest at his home at 29 Bassett Street in New Haven. He was rushed to the Hospital of St. Raphael’s, where he was pronounced dead.

Dubey's three roommates and two other people were in the apartment at the time of the shooting. No one else was injured.

At the time, police speculated the motive was robbery.

Dubey was a popular bike enthusiast and musician who worked at The Devil's Gear Bike Shop in downtown New Haven.

Police say in September 2011, Fair was arrested and convicted of first degree robbery.

Friends, co-workers and cyclists thanked police in person for an arrest a year and a half after the killing of Dubey.

"For everybody keeping Mitchell in their thoughts and keeping him in the thoughts of New Haven, it's moments like this, it's community," said Matt Feiner, Devil's Gear Bike Shop.

Emotions were visible as detectives detailed how a weekend tip lead to an arrest Tuesday of 19-year-old Fair, who seemed surprised when the sergeant cuffed him.

"I'm pretty sure he thought a year and a half later he probably thought he had gotten away with it," said Sgt. Tony Reyes, NHPD, "so it was good to see the look on his face where he realized he didn't get away with it."

Fair was apparently also surprised that day in March 2011 because there were more people in the Bassett Street apartment he targeted for robbery than he expected, and that's why police say he fired.

"He saw Mr. Dubey get out of his car and start walking into the house and Mr. Dubey was known to have money on him because he had a job," said Asst. Chief Archie Generoso, NHPD.

Dubey's parents in California were notified of the arrest. His New Haven Family found some comfort that the suspected killer was finally caught.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart today, a little justice for Mitchell, a little bit of peace for everybody," said Feiner.
