Toddler found in diaper and t-shirt, mother charged

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Dressed in only a diaper and a t-shirt total strangers came to the rescue of a little boy in West Haven. It took the mother hours to realize her son was even missing.

Now she's charged with risk of injury to a minor. In court Thursday she tried to explain how he got out.

The mother, Keishana Miller, tried to avoid cameras Thursday, but said someone was supposed to be watching the child.

She does not have a record and the judge let her out with the promise she'll appear at her next court date.

"Get those cameras out of my face," said 33-year-old Miller, outside Milford Superior Court.

However, she couldn't avoid the camera when she got booked last night at the West Haven police department.

Neighbors say they found her son who's about two years old wandering the streets in just a diaper.

"I had someone watching him for a little bit," Miller said, "they need to get the story straight."

"And who was watching the child," asked News 8's Stephanie Simoni.

The story News 8 was told from neighbors is that Miller's son was confused and by himself just before 8 p.m. on Coleman Street, so they called police.

"He acted nervous and very shy," said the man who found the boy, Mark Beavers, "like he didn't know where he was at."

Beavers says about two hours later they found Miller, put her in cuffs and in the back of a cruiser.

The child is now with his father.

Miller was not happy to see News 8, but we wanted to ask her one more question.

"Are you a good mother," Simoni asked.

"I pay for everything. I do everything for this child," Miller said. "Can you get out of my face with the raggedy cameras?"
