MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A man and woman from Orange have been arrested in connection with a murder-for-hire plot in Milford.
Gregory A. Christofakis, 50, and his girlfriend, Ziba Guy, 44, who live on Marsh Hill Road, were arrested Thursday.
Police said the intended targets of the murder-for-hire were Christofakis's estranged wife and Guy's ex-husband.
Christofakis, owner of Greg's Autobody in Milford, is being charged with criminal attempt to commit murder and conspiracy to commit assault. News 8 is told he has a long list of priors, including threatening and disorderly conduct. His divorce case was set to go to court next week. He is being held on a $1 million bond.
Guy is being charged with conspiracy to commit assault and is being held on a $500,000 bond.
Guy's ex-husband told News 8 that he isn't surprised by the news.
"Have you ever been afraid of her," News 8 asked.
"Yeah, she got arrested last year for threatening me, said I was going to be killed with one of my own firearms," he said.
He tells us they were only married 10 months, but he continues to have problems with her. Guy now lives with Christofakis on Marsh Hill Road in Orange, and the couple works together in Milford.
Christafakis' business, Greg's Autobody, is where the couple both work. However, Guy is actually a doctor, she's an ob-gyn, and News 8 is told that she practiced in New York, in Westchester county, but has never practiced in Connecticut.
News 8 is told, instead of practicing medicine, she sold purses out of the auto body shop.
"She had the purses and then she was always hanging out over there," said Vito Sabato, of Milford, "every time I went over there, she just always had an attitude towards us so I just stopped talking to her."
Folks working on New Haven Avenue watched the scene unfold.
"Police were there all day, all day, there was probably what, like five cop cars there, five, six," said Mario Puglisi.
However, they had no idea about the murder-for-hire plot.
"When that guy told me it was that I was like there's no way, I never would've believed it in a million years," Puglisi said.
It does seem like something out of a movie, especially because the couple has been known for their charity work. In fact, News 8 did a story with them just this past May; a three-year-old girl suffering from cerebral palsy and epilepsy was in need of a new wheelchair, and Christofakis and Guy stepped up, holding a car wash at Greg's Auto Body and donating a portion of the proceeds from their business. Still, folks who knew them say something wasn't right.
"I never thought, I thought it'd be drugs or tax evasion or insurance fraud," said Puglisi.
In court, Guy's attorney did reference a struggle with anxiety and medication.
"She's got a drug problem and she's got some kind of psychotic disorder," her ex-husband told News 8.
Note: This is the May, 2012 News 8 story about the fundraiser for a toddler with cerebral palsy, which featured Christofakis and Guy.
