STORRS, Conn. (WTNH) -- An alleged sexual assault near the UConn campus on Saturday turned out to be a falsely reported incident, police say.

Police said that during a subsequent investigation, detectives reviewed security camera footage and conducted follow-up interviews with the alleged victim.

Late Saturday night, it was determined that the incident never happened and that the complainant falsely reported the assault.

A statement released by the police stated that timely notification of such incidents to the public is required by law. All reports are taken seriously in order to protect the public.

Although the alleged incident did not take place, police encourage all members of the community to report suspicious activity promptly.

Campus safety reminders:

  • Always walk with a friend and stay in well-lit areas
  • Trust your instincts
  • Use campus escort services

There is no word if the woman who reported the crime will face any charges.
