Farmington, Conn. (WTNH) - Webster Bank employees called police after spotting a man in a suspicious outfit sitting outside the bank.
Employees at the Farmington bank called police on Feb. 17 after spotting a man sitting in a truck wearing a full face motor cycle helmet. They told police there were no motorcycles in the parking lot, so they were worried they were about to be robbed.
Witnesses told police they watched the man in the helmet walk up to the ATM, but then head back to the truck, where another man was waiting. The truck drove off, but returned a short time later. Police stopped the pair as they attempted to leave the parking lot for a second time.
The pair were later identified as Robert Alverson, 46, and John Filipetti, 52.
Police say Filipetti was wearing a ski mask under the helmet and he was in possession of heroin paraphernalia, while Alverson had an illegal switch blade knife.
After initially providing conflicting stories, the pair eventually confessed that they were trying to rob ATM customers.
Surveillance footage showed Filipetti approached the ATM twice while customers were withdrawing money. He said he didn't rob one of the patrons because the customer only withdrew $20.
Alverson faces charges that include robbery, breach of peace and a weapons charge. Filipetti was charged with robbery, drug paraphernalia, criminal mischief, and breach of peace.
Filipetti posted a $50,000 bond while Alverson is being held on a $50,000 bond.
