Waterbury (WTNH) - Police are investigating a break-in at the Waterbury DMV branch. A maintenance worker called police this morning reporting that a rear door was breached.
All day state police investigators went in and out of the active crime scene at the DMV branch along Thomaston Avenue in Waterbury . It was unnerving for employees arriving for work at the school next door.
"Well, when I came in the police were here and they had the area cornered off. We heard there was a break in at the motor vehicle," said teacher Ed Bostwick.
Around 6:45 a.m., State Police investigators received a complaint from a maintenance worker at the Department of Motor Vehicles. When they arrived they discovered a rear door at the state agency had been broken into.
They also found the phone and internet lines to the building had been cut.
The DMV shares the building with two other spaces including the High Road School .
The loss of phone and internet posed a unique challenge for the school day.
"We called AT&T and they were nice enough to route calls coming in to the director's cell phone," Bostwick said. "[It's] a little hectic but it was fine."
The ADT security company was also on scene for a time today. A large section of the parking lot around the facility was also blocked off as investigators with the State Police Major Crimes Squad worked.
As part of the case, they asked the neighboring business about the specific layout of the building.
"And the layout of the building is such that we have part of it, the landlord has part of it and DMV has part of it," Bostwick said. "[Police] wanted to know if we had a back door or any access to motor vehicle and the answer is no; our space does not have any entrance to motor vehicle."
The DMV facility will remain closed Tuesday as this investigation continues. For now, customers are advised to use the DMV facility in New Britain .
