West Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - A six week old baby boy is recovering from serious injuries, including several broken ribs, allegedly at the hands of his father.
Yosue-Amil Sierra Gomez has been charged with risk of injury and second degree assault.
Police say they were first called to Gomez's West Haven apartment last Friday night after an anonymous caller reported that a female and her son were being held against their will. When they arrived on scene, Gomez and his girlfriend admitted to having a verbal argument, but said it did not get physical.
The police officers, along with a DCF worker, asked to see the baby to make sure he was not injured. The DCF worker noticed that the baby's breathing was irregular and he had noticeable bruises on his right back side. The baby was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment.
A thorough examination revealed that the baby had several broken ribs, lacerations to his liver and spleen as well as bilateral hemorrhaging in the chest. The baby is listed in stable but serious condition.
Gomez admitted to doctors that he may have squeezed the baby too hard while caring for him. Additionally, the DCF worker said Gomez admitted he had shaken the baby after he almost fell off of him while he was asleep. Gomez also told police that he was walking with the baby and tripped over a dumbbell and squeezed the baby hard while falling forward.
Gomez is being held on a $50,000 bond.
