Branford man due in court for dog cruelty case

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Branford man is set to make his first court appearance after being charged with choking his dog to death when it misbehaved.

Twenty-two-year-old Alex Wullaert is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in New Haven Superior Court on animal cruelty and littering charges. He's free on a promise to appear in court.

Wullaert was arrested last Monday following a police investigation into the death of a dog found in a discarded plastic bag in Madison in January.

Police say a microchip found inside the dog's body identified Wullaert as the owner. Authorities say Wullaert confessed to strangling the pit bull-boxer mix at his home after it urinated on his leg and bit him.

There's no phone listing for Wullaert, and it's not clear if he has a lawyer.
