HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Three Connecticut students are set to visit Washington, D.C., next month as newly selected 2011 Presidential Scholars.
Theresa Oei of Hebron, Lyra Olson of Middlebury and Clayton Rountree of Killingworth will be among hundreds of students nationwide honored at a recognition ceremony during their trip to Washington from June 18 to 21.
A presidential commission appoints Presidential Scholars based on academic success, artistic work, community service, leadership and other factors.
Oei attends East Catholic High School, while Olson attends Choate Rosemary Hall and Rountree attends Haddam-Killingworth Senior High School.
They also get to take their most inspiring or challenging teacher on the trip to the Capitol. The Connecticut teachers accompanying them will be Ann Marie Ward of Manchester, Philip Ventre of Madison and James Daniels of Higganum.
