Conn. education test scores show mixed results

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The latest results from two statewide education performance tests are mixed, with younger Connecticut students showing improvements, but fewer than half of 10th graders meeting a statewide goal for math, science and reading.

The State Department of Education released results of the Connecticut Mastery Test and Connecticut Academic Performance Test on Thursday. Both were given to thousands of students in March.

State education officials said there have been improvements in CMT scores since 2006 among elementary and middle school students, with only sixth graders losing some ground on the reading test. In math and science, about two-thirds met the goal.

State Education Commissioner Stefan Pryor said while he's pleased there are signs of progress, there remain "significant gaps in achievement" between economically disadvantaged students and their peers in Connecticut.
