HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The interim president of the Board of Regents for Higher Education has named a state Department of Labor official as his chief of staff.
Philip Austin announced Friday he has appointed Deputy Labor Commissioner Dennis Murphy to the position.
Murphy has been the deputy Labor Commissioner since January 2011, and recently served as acting commissioner. He also has held top administrative positions for the cities of Stamford and Bridgeport.
Austin, a former University of Connecticut president, is overseeing the board after the resignations of its president, Robert Kennedy, and executive vice president, Michael Meotti, amid a public outcry over unauthorized staff pay raises.
Murphy will spend four days a week at the Board of Regents, which will pay most of his $129,000 salary, and one day at the Department of Labor.
