Sacred Heart president steps down

Sacred Heart University - Sacred Heart University President Anthony Cernera has announced his resignation after 22 years at the helm.

Cernera informed the Board of Trustees on Thursday that after several months of reflection, he intends to resign so he can pursue his work as a professor and develop leadership roles in national and international Catholic educational organizations.

John Petillo, dean of the John F. Welch College of Business, was named by the board as interim president effective immediately.

Board Vice Chairman James Morley praised the 60-year-old Cernera for his 22 years of dedication to the university.

Sacred Heart, located in Fairfield, is a Roman Catholic university with about 6,000 students.
