Storrs, Conn. (AP) - A 13-year-old student says the University of Connecticut is discriminating against him by barring him from traveling to South Africa for course work.
Colin Carlson, an honors student, signed up for an African ecology course that involved a summer field study in South Africa. His mother said her offer to pay her way as chaperone and release the university from liability was rejected.
Carlson started studying at UConn at age 9. He has filed a complaint with the university and U.S. Department of Education's office of civil rights.
University spokesman Mike Kirk would not comment on a case that may involve litigation. He said safety is a top concern on overseas trips.
Carlson says if safety is an issue, the university should end its travel abroad program.
