Norwalk, Conn. (WTNH) -- Firefighters responded to four separate accidents within a one-mile stretch on I-95 in Norwalk Saturday morning.
According to the Norwalk Fire Department, the accidents all occurred on I-95 Northbound from the Yankee Doodle Bridge to the Westport line, between 1:50 a.m. and 5:15 a.m.
In total, five people needed to be extricated from vehicles and seven were taken to Norwalk Hospital.
The first accident occurred near the Westport town line and involved two cars and a tractor trailer. One of the cars came to rest facing the wrong way, pinned between the center guard rail and the tractor trailer. The other car struck the rear of the tractor trailer and ended up in the breakdown lane. The drivers of both cars had to be extricated and were taken to the hospital.
The second accident took place near the I-95N entrance ramp from East Avenue. Officials said an SUV rear-ended a tractor trailer-style dump truck. The driver was pinned under the dash board and needed to be extricated. He was taken to the hospital with possible life threatening injuries.
The third accident occurred on the Yankee Doodle Bridge, prior to Exit 16. According to officials, one car spun out into the center barrier, then two other cars struck that car. Two people needed to be extricated. A male and female passenger from one vehicle, and two males from another vehicle were taken to the hospital.
The fourth accident occurred on the Yankee Doodle Bridge, while the highway was shut down from the second accident and traffic was being diverted off Exit 16. Officials said a driver plowed into the back of a car sending it into the rear of a tractor trailer, as traffic was merging to exit. One female driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The accidents remain under investigation.
