5k run for Sandy Hook at Aviano Air Base

AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy (WTNH)-- The Aviano Air Base in Italy put on a 5k run for Sandy Hook on Saturday morning.

According to the Defense Department, all the proceeds from the run went to the United Way of Western Connecticut Sandy Hook Support Fund.

Aviano's public affairs officer said the run took place at 9:35 AM as a "heartfelt response" to what happened in Connecticut

The airmen raised $5,200 and 317 people attended the event.

TSgt Joshua Roberts organized the event and TSrgt Sarah Barrett, who lives a half hour from Newtown, participated in the run.
