Hospital cited for unsafe workplace

Danbury, Conn. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Labor says Danbury Hospital could face more than $6,000 in fines after being cited for failing to provide a safe work environment for employees.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced Friday that a six-month investigation determined the hospital has not put in enough measures to prevent workers from being injured by violent patients.

The investigation, which started in January, found 25 cases in the last five years that have resulted in work-related injuries sidelining employees, including an incident in March where an elderly patient shot a nurse.

OSHA has proposed a $6,300 fine against the hospital, which can contest the penalty. A Danbury Hospital spokeswoman said the hospital is reviewing the report.
