Another fire at old Remington Arms complex

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) -- A fire broke out the old Remington Arms complex in Bridgeport on Saturday.

News 8 has learned that all four floors of the factory have collapsed. There is a lot of debris and the fire continues to flare up on occasion.

Firefighters found out about the fire just before noon on Saturday when a man ran into their fire station.

Police are out keeping folks away since there is a possibility that the building could collapse.

Assistant Chief William Hathaway of Bridgeport Fire says the fire started in the roof of a middle building and even jumped to another.

He says it is very difficult to get the old brick buildings extinguished.

"This building, we can't get inside 'cause the floors are all burnt out, 'cause it's burnt before, there's no way of getting inside to put the fire out," Chief Hathaway explained, "so we're trying to hit it from the outside and it's almost impossible due to the heat today."

Some people from the area say the building is a problem and that this is not the first time such a fire has broken out.

"Those buildings have been standing for years and years, I don't know what the city budget is like, but it's a health hazard," said Lorenzo Pettway, Pastor of Faithful Church.

Hathaway is right, the building has had a number of fires over the years and the city recently got a $2 million dgrant to demolish the building.

Ironically, Hathaway says the Bridgeport is scheduled to tear some of the buildings down this Wednesday.

Investigators are still trying to figure out exactly how the fire started.

So far, there have been no injuries.

The complex is located at Barnum and Hallet Streets and this is the same building that reported a fire back in April 2010.  The building has had a history of multiple fires over the years.
