Candidate-involved hit & run 911 call released

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) -- A 911 call from the victim of a hit and run in Bridgeport that involved a Democratic state house candidate from the Park City has been released.

"I've just been in a hit and run accident."

The statement made in that 911 call was by the 26-year-old who was in the car that police say Christina Ayala hit back on August 14. Police say Ayala, a legislative candidate, ran a red light at the intersection of North and Briarwood avenues around 9 o'clock at night.

The 26-year-old can be heard telling the 911 operator she was hurt in the crash.

"My head, yes. She smashed into me, she went through the red light. Do you know who hit you? Who was responsible? No it was a hit and run, they just left."

A man who witnessed the hit and run drove after Ayala to get her to stop.

"Like I said she took off, she didn't even go and check on the person, my wife is with the other person."

He tells a 911 operator he found Ayala's car 8 blocks away from the scene of the crash and got her to pull over.

"I had to chase the suspect down. She's pulled over and she has a black Sentra. She may take off again I'm not trying to chase her, but I have her here. Sid she hit your car? No, she hit a young girl."

He goes on to tell the 911 operator he thinks Ayala could be intoxicated and he's worried she might take off again.

"You need to hurry because listen she has kids in the car, she may be intoxicated. Okay, what's your name? What's her name? I don't know. No, what's yours? My name's Kenny."

Police did not test Ayala for alcohol on the scene. She did tell our partners at the CT Post that she was not intoxicated.

News 8 knocked on Ayala's door to try to get a comment from her, but there was no answer. She has publicly apologized, saying she "panicked" that night and regrets her "misjudgment."

We reached out to police and Ayala's attorney, but no one returned our calls for comment.

Ayala is due in court on September 11th.
