BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) -- Bridgeport officials expect the beaches and parks to be packed this weekend as Barnum Festival activities go on around town, including fireworks Friday night and a parade on Sunday.

"You can see there's a lot of activities going on so we want everyone to be safe," said Mayor Bill Finch, "this weekend especially and all throughout the summer."

The Mayor joined up with the city's police and fire chiefs to offer some safety tips for the weekend.

"The police department will be out in force this weekend," said Chief Joseph Gaudett Jr., Bridgeport Police Department. "We will be conducting DUI checkpoints, asking people not to drink and drive. If you do have to drink have a designated driver."

And if you're considering driving an ATV around town, think again.

"Dirt bikes and ATV's are illegal," said Gaudett. "They are not to be driven on any city street or park and we will take possession if we see them out there."

The fireworks at Seaside Park will begin at sunset, but with the 4th of July approaching, the fire chief reminded residents that fireworks are illegal.

"The only thing that's legal right now are sparklers, caps and fountains, and those are ground fountains that have sparks shooting up," said Bridgeport Fire Chief Brian Rooney. "No Aeriel devices, no explosions, all those things are illegal."

The fireworks will start around 8:45 Friday night at Seaside Park.
