NORWALK, Conn. (WTNH) --Norwalk Police are warning drivers to stay off of their cell phones.
Folks either talking or texting while driving through Norwalk should beware, because Norwalk Police are on the look out to nab distracted drivers.
When Norwalk Police run their special operation, they will be targeting distracted drivers, but they have no target when it comes to ticket numbers.
"This is just stepped up enforcement, whatever the numbers turns out to be, that is what they are," said Chief Harry Rilling of the Norwalk Police Dept.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday during the morning and evening commute, extra Norwalk officers will be on duty. The officers will be focusing on folks talking on cell phones, or texting while behind the wheel. Norwalk's mayor said the operation is about sending a message to teen drivers.
"I think in their minds, what they are doing is not dangerous and we have to over come that," said Mayor Richard Moccia (R) of Norwalk.
Ticket amounts can range from $100 to $400. The city doesn't keep the money. The money will be sent directly to the state. Norwalk will then get back a small percentage of that money.
Norwalk Police are planning similar operations for the summer.
