STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH) - An elderly woman driving along Halloween Boulevard in Stamford struck a utility pole, killing her 81-year old passenger.

Carmella Abbazia, 86, of Stamford was traveling northbound, just south of Jefferson Street when she lost control of her vehicle, causing it to mount on to a curb and hit a utility pole.

Abbazia's sister, 81-year-old Antoinette Palmieri died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

The crash occurred at 7:35 a.m.  Abbazia was driving a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria, 4-door sedan.

Speed and mechanical failure are issues being addressed during the investigation.
