GREENWICH, Conn. (WTNH) - Second floor break ins are rare, but they've been happening in lower Fairfield County.
In one Fairfield neighborhood, someone was home at the right time, and scared off the burglars.
In the attempted break in on Round Hill Road in Greenwich last night, police say the suspects tried to break into the home through the second story balcony.
They said house break ins are on the rise in Fairfield County, and that neighbors should be on the look out.
"The use of lighting, when you do go away have someone check on house, remove your mail, usually an occupied house is something burglars don't want to deal with," said Lt. Kraig Gray, Greenwich Police Department.
Police suggest keeping windows and doors on every floor locked, activate alarm systems, keeping lights on a timer, and have a neighbor or friend pick up the newspaper and mail to make your house appear occupied.
Any suspicious activity should also be reported to police, even if it turns out to be nothing.
"We love coming out for false alarms, prefer to come out for a false alarm than the real thing, so if you see something suspicious call us," said Gray.
According to police, suspects are targeting homes with easy access to Merritt/95. The burglary attempt on Round Hill Road is just one mile from the Merritt.
