FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTNH)-- A man is dead after a standoff with Fairfield police on Saturday night.
Police say they responded to a barricaded subject at Colonial Gardens Condominium Complex at 245 Sunnyridge Avenue, around 7:30 PM. Initial reports indicated a verbal domestic dispute between a woman and her boyfriend.
The woman went to a neighbor's condo to call police, after receiving threats from her boyfriend, Douglas Garni, 40. He followed her to the neighbor's home, before retreating back to their home after he learned police were called.
The woman told police Garni had several weapons registered to him, which may have included assault weapons, as well as handguns.
Police say they established a perimeter and attempted to make contact with GarniĀ through phone and an audible PA system, while he was inside his residence.
Nearby condos were evacuated by the Faiirfield fire department and residents were relocated to Station 2 for the duration of the incident.
A single gunshot was heard around 11 PM, from a wooded area north of Garni's condo. Police found Garni's body shortly after, in the wooded area.
Initial reports indicate Garni died from a self inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
The area remained an active crime scene until 2 AM Sunday morning, and the incident is still under investigation.
