GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) — State health officials say a Greenwich resident has tested positive for West Nile virus and is hospitalized.

The Greenwich Time reports that the person is between 70 and 79 years old and became ill in mid-August with a fever, headache and some neurological symptoms.

A spokesman for the state Department of Public Health provided no other details, including the patient's condition.

Theodore Andreadis, director of the state's mosquito-trapping program, said the virus built up early this year due to extended periods of heat and frequent rainfall that helped mosquitoes breed.

He says the overall population has dropped significantly.
