BRIDGEPORT Conn. (CT POST/WTNH) - A construction trailer filled with tools was stolen from a Habitat for Humanity site Wednesday at a work site on Barnum Avenue near the city line with Stratford.
"It's just ridiculous how people act. There's not much to do out here, but there you can find something to do where you don't have to steal from people," said Chana Short of Bridgeport.
The trailer was worth about $5,000 when it was purchased a few years ago, according to Bruce Berzin , Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County's co-president and chief operating officer. The trailer was chained at a construction site, Berzin said. The thief, or thieves, cut the chain and rolled the trailer away.
"It's one of the crazier things that's been stolen. But like I've said, Bridgeport and Mayor Finch have been terrific to us. This is one of the things you cope with," said Berzin.
Berzin said Habitat has dealt with numerous attempted burglaries at its construction sites in the city's East Side over the past few weeks, but the thieves have been scared away by alarm systems installed at the work sites.
"I sent an email to the mayor shortly after this happened, and his response was instant," said Berzin.
The Mayor and Chief of Police have promised to pay close attention to the building sites and the Habitat construction facility. The city wants to help operations run smoothly for an organization that desires to better Bridgeport's image and it's citizen's lives.
"What we're told is, we're the only ones building homes on the East Side, so we stand out in that respect," Berzin said. "It's obvious people sort of keep any eye on our progress. Happily it's just been attempts so far, instead of successful break-ins."
The investigation is ongoing, Bridgeport police are asking anyone with information to call 203-581-5100.
