Albany, N.Y. (AP) - A climber has fallen nearly 50 feet to his death trying to scale an ice wall near Fawns Leap waterfall in the Catskills.

According to Times Union, Maureen Wren of the Department of Environmental Conservation says 40-year-old Daniel Pawlik of Stamford, Conn., fell Sunday off 23A in Ulster County. It took about a half hour for the mountain's fire and rescue team to pull the man to safety. He was taken to Albany Medical Center where he was treated for injuries and later died.

The investigation is continuing. An autopsy was expected.
