EASTON, Conn. (AP) — A professional diver from Connecticut says he's planning to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a rowboat.
Forty-year-old John Bauby of Easton says he intends to begin the 5,000-mile trek in the spring of 2013, but he's already begun preparing and raising money.
And his boat is no ordinary rowboat. It's a 24-foot-long, 800-pound vessel made out of fiberglass, Kevlar and wood, and it's designed to stay afloat even if it's split in half.
Bauby says he's preparing for a five-month trip from Hatteras, N.C., to Portugal.
The Ocean Rowing Society International organization says six people have completed rowboat trips from the U.S. to Europe. One was lost at sea, and another 16 couldn't finish or had to be rescued.
