Man's radioactivity sets off trooper's detector

MILFORD, Conn. (AP) -- A firefighter pulled over by state police this week said he was surprised to learn the reason: he set off the trooper's radioactivity detector.

Mike Apatow of Milford told the Connecticut Post that he had a nuclear stress test Wednesday because of high blood pressure. The procedure involves injecting a small amount of radioactive material into the veins to track blood flow to the heart.

But the small amount was enough to set off the trooper's radioactivity detector later that day on Interstate 84 in Newtown. The Stratford firefighter says he's glad he had a doctor's note explaining the radioactive test. He gave the note to the trooper and was let go without incident.

State police say many of their cruisers have radioactivity detectors that are very sensitive.
