Stamford, Conn. (WTNH) - A food bank in Stamford wants to know who stole its American flag.

The flag had been flying outside The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County for 9 years until Monday when someone snatched it.

Folks at the Food Bank say they were both hurt and angry when they came to work earlier this week and saw the flag had been stolen.

"Earlier in the week we noticed our flag was missing," said Kate Lombardo. "I was profoundly upset about it."

They searched all over the area, even on train tracks, looking for the flag. The executive director of the Food Bank even wrote a letter to the editor of her local paper. Donations poured in to help the Bank purchase a new flag. Then, Thursday morning, someone in a nearby building spotted the flag on the roof of the Food Bank.

"It was on the roof. Who would think to look on the roof, and sure enough there she was on the rough and we have her and she's back, we're going to fly her proudly once again and we're going to thank everyone who took notice of it," said Lombardo.

She thinks some local kids are behind the flag's disappearance and she has a message for them about respecting our country's flag.

"There's an appropriate way to treat a flag and that they can learn from any veteran's organization and that we're happy they didn't destroy it," she said.

Now that the flag has been found the Food Bank says it's received several phone calls from veterans in the area who want to come by and help clean up the flag so it can get back up where it belongs.
