MONROE, Conn. (WTNH) -- Police in Monroe spoke briefly at a press conference Thursday about Sandy Hook students' return to school.

During the press conference, Lt. Keith White, of the Monroe Police Department, said that overall students seemed happy to see their friends and excited about their new school.

Thursday morning, when students began their day, an assembly was held, at which time parents were given the opportunity to voice any of their concerns and ask questions to the Board of Education, superintendent, vice-principal, and principal.

"The lecture hall was full with parents who had legitimate questions," Lt. White said.

Lt. White said he believes that most parents were satisfied with what they saw Thursday and with the answers they were given.

While he could not give a percentage, Lt. White said that attendance was very good, noting that most of the buses and classrooms were full.

When asked about the police presence at the school Lt. White said, "we are trying to keep a balance, we don't want them to think this is a police state. We want them to know this is a school, a school first, and a place they can learn and enjoy time with their friends."

The amount of police presence and security needed will be addressed on a week-to-week basis depending on what the school board, parents, and students are comfortable with.

Overall, Lt. White said that students seemed excited to see their friends and teachers, and teachers had the same response.
