STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Stamford police are investigating the apparent murder suicide of a woman and her mother.
The incident happened at a home on Long Ridge Road.
According to the Stamford Advocate , police say it appears a middle-aged daughter shot and killed her elderly mother, then herself.
A neighbor called police out of concern after the elderly mother and her daughter hadn't been seen for some time.
When officers responded and arrived to the home on Long Ride Road, they first had to use a ladder to get inside through a second-story window.
According to police, the mother and daughter may have been reclusive for sometime because the house had been foreclosed and recently sold.
I am devastated. Cause this can be me, it can be you, it can be anybody. Where are we in this society that we are not caring about neighbors, about families," said neighbor Phyllis Doonan.
The mother was found at the bottom of the stairway, leading to the second story. According to police, it looks like she had been shot at the top of the stairs and then tumbled down the stairs. The daughter was found in a second-story bedroom, adjacent to the bed where she took her own life.
There was a cache of guns in the home because the elderly woman's late husband was an avid outdoorsman. Authorities believe that the financial troubles for the mother and daughter began about six years ago, not long after the death of their late husband and father.
Stamford Police have used this tragedy as a example to say that there are always options, and there is always help for those who are in need.
