Bridgeport (WTNH) - Emergency crews in Bridgeport had to build structural support for a building after an SUV crashed through the building's foundation.
The driver initially fled the scene, but was found a few hours later.
It happened right where Lennox Ave. comes to a T-intersection with Fairfield Ave. Witnesses told News Channel 8 the driver of a Chevrolet Equinox was driving down Lennox Ave., went through the stop and plowed into the building.
"The car was nose first inside the building, maybe about two to three feet," Asst. Chief Robert McLeod said. "Major to moderate damage to the structural integrity of the building."
The impact damaged a water pipe as well as the concrete foundation.
"We're stabilizing the building until a structural engineer can come take a look at it," Asst. Chief McLeod said. "We shut the water off to the building."
Witnesses said the woman behind the wheel ran away immediately after the accident. She was later found by police and taken to the hospital. She has been identified as Cherise Trotter of Bridgeport.
Trotter has been charged with evading responsibility and failure to obey stop sign.
The building belongs to Horizons, a program that treats people who suffer from addictions and mental health problems. No one inside the house was injured.
The vehicle was removed from the building and towed away a little after 5:00 a.m.
