New Haven (WTNH) - Roller derby gives roller skating a whole new meaning. It is a tough, high-energy sport on wheels. During the game, women elbow and push their way around a track while trying to keep their balance on skates. A new movie in theatres called "Whip It" showcases the sport, giving a popularity boost to the sport.
But roller derby has been around in Connecticut for years, and got its start in the late 1930's to early 1940's. The CT RollerGirls, who call themselves the "Daughters of The American Derby Revolution," were founded in 2006, and they say that the camraderie among teammates is what makes the sport most rewarding.
