STRATFORD, Conn. (WTNH)-- There are 3,500 people and counting who have signed an online petition on change.org asking that a street in Stratford be named after Victoria Soto, a first grade teacher who died a hero at Sandy Hook Elementary.
"We were so shocked by it but so happy, and to even have people consider it, is really a great feeling," said Vicki's younger sister, Jillian Soto.
Vicki grew up in Stratford. Her siblings say they'd love to see the street in front of the town's high school renamed "Victoria Soto Way."
Vicki Soto, as she was known to her family and friends, went to school at Stratford high and for that reason and because she was an educator, her siblings say this would be the perfect street to be named after her.
Carlos Soto, Vicki's younger brother said, "she gave her life to save her kids and I think this is the least we can do for her."
"It's an honor to have them even think about it, to have our sister's name put on the street right in front of the high school she graduated from," said Jillian Soto.
The town's mayor says whether it's the street or something else, he is working with Vicki's family to make sure her memory is honored in her hometown.
"We've reached out to them and there are a number of ideas out there to remember Vicky Soto and we look forward to supporting them," said Stratford mayor John Harkins.
Carlos Soto said, "it is doing her justice and it really is just for her and to show how much she meant to everyone and how much we all love her."
