NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — The Newtown schools superintendent says consolidating the first grade classes at Sandy Hook Elementary School is part of the process of preparing for the students' return next month to a refurbished middle school in Monroe.
In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday, Janet Robinson said most of the classes will remain intact, except the first grade where 20 students were killed by a gunman a week ago. She said one of the three classes has a single remaining student.
Sandy Hook students will begin classes at the former Chalk Hill school Jan. 3. On the day before, Sandy Hook teachers will meet in the morning and parents can bring their children for an open house in the afternoon.
Robinson said Monroe teachers volunteered to prepare the classrooms.
