Redding firefighter dies at brush fire

Redding, Conn. (WTNH/AP) - A Redding firefighter died on Sunday evening while responding to a brush fire, according to firefighters.

First Lieutenant George Marshall Sanford died from unknown medical causes around 6:30 p.m. while responding to the brush fire, Redding Fire Chief Ron Van Oostendorp said in a statement.

Sanford was 67-years-old. He was a former chief in the department, and was a member for over 50 years, and was a life member.

"Our condolences and prayers go out to First Lieutenant Sanford's family in their hour of sorrow" Van Oostendorp said in the statement.  Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman offered their condolences on Monday.

Flags at the Capitol will be lowered during Sanford's funeral. Plans for the funeral have not been announced.
