BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) -- With increased police presence at schools across the state, parents faced the difficult task of sending their children back to school.

Hand in hand, mothers and fathers walked their children to class.

A group of mothers stood outside the front doors at Black Rock Elementary School in Bridgeport Monday morning.

Parents are coming together, looking for reassurance that their children are safe.

"I did go in and I did ask what safety measures are we taking that we didn't take in the days prior," one parent said.

Mayor Bill Finch and Superintendent Paul Vallas met with students and staff first thing Monday morning.

"We've asked all of our schools, to once again, for the umpteenth time, to go through their school safety checklist to make sure we're doing all the things that need to be done," Vallas said. "Cameras are working, cameras are being monitored. Doors are locked."

Parents say the current procedures are not enough.

Officials say they will do everything they can to prevent this from ever happening again.

"You can never be safe enough," Vallas said. "In this day and age, we always need to be thinking and rethinking school safety protocols. "

Some parents say they need to see it to believe it.

"I'll sit here all day and wait," another parent said. "because I know we have a good school, but I'm not completely confident that nothing will happen. That's my baby in there. It's the only one I got."
