Shelton, Conn. (WTNH) - A Shelton police officer who was struck by a truck while on duty has died.
Sergeant Orville Smith was directing traffic on Route 110 after a private fireworks show Saturday night when a pick-up truck hit Smith and his cruiser.
"The loss of Sgt. Orville Smith has deeply affected the entire Shelton Police Department," Shelton Police Chief Joel Hurliman said in a statement. "Sgt. Smith was a dedicated officer and hiss loss will affect the entire City."
The driver of that truck, Bruce Knapik, 63, of Bridgeport, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. More charges are possible.
Smith was a 39 year veteran of the Shelton Police Department . He also served in the Marines in the Vietnam War, was a volunteer firefighter and past president of the Shelton Police Association, police said.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Smith. Memorial services are pending.
