NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) -- The Red Cross is helping 21 people after an overnight fire tore through their home on New Britain.

The fire at the apartment building on Sexton Street affected five families, comprised of 11 adults and 10 children.

Residents tell News 8's Kent Pierce they think the fire began on porch on the second floor and then climbed up to the third floor.

The fire caused extensive damage, but officials say everyone was able to get out safely.
