Burlington, Conn. (WTNH) - Two Lifestar helicopters were called to the scene of a three-car crash in Burlington.
State police say the accident closed down traffic on Route 4 in the area of Lyon Road, near Lewis S. Mills High School.
John Bonville, 53, of Harwington, was driving his 2004 Buick Rendezvous west on Route 4 when he hit head on with a 2011 Ford Focus, driven by 25-year-old Rachel Vienneau.
The accident happened around 8:50 Monday morning.
Both drivers had to be extricated. It took workers 45 minutes to get Vienneau out of her car. Officers say she sustained injuries to her lower extremities.
Lifestar helicopters transported both drivers to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries.
The car driving behind the Focus, a Green Honda Civic, swerved to avoid collision and ended up in an embankment. It came to rest on the driver's side. The driver, 35-year-old Nicole Bastiaanse-Frintch, was able to get out of the car on her own. She was taken to St. Francis Hospital with minor injuries.
Officials say none of the three drivers were connected to the nearby high school.
The speed limit in the area is 45 mph, but it is unknown at this time if speed was a factor.
Officers say they have several witnesses.
The accident reconstruction team is on the scene.
