HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Four airplanes destined for New York City have been diverted to Bradley International Airport due to thunderstorms.

Airport spokesman John Wallace says the planes were routed to central Connecticut as a precaution as severe weather moves through the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the state of Connecticut until 9 p.m. A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Litchfield County.

Temperatures were in the 90s for the third straight day in what has become the region's first heat wave of the season. Cooler temperatures are expected for the weekend.
