HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A 23-year-old inmate at the Hartford Correctional Center has died of an apparent suicide.

The state's Department of Correction said Tuesday that staff conducting routine tours found inmate Gregory Bryant of Hartford on Sunday evening with a plastic bag over his head and a piece of bed sheet tied around his neck. It says staff immediately took measures to try to save his life and he was pronounced dead at Hartford Hospital.

Officials say Bryant entered the prison earlier this month following his conviction on the charge of Violation of Probation or Conditional Discharge.

Officials with the Department of Correction Security Division and state police are investigating the death. The exact cause of death will be determined by the state medical examiner's office.
