MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) — A well-known gay-rights advocate from Uganda is visiting Connecticut to speak out against legislation in his country that would make homosexuality a capital felony for some.
The Rev. Mark Kiyimba is scheduled to speak Thursday night at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford and Sunday at the Unitarian-Universalist Society East in Manchester.
Kiyimba runs a school for 150 orphans who have lost their parents to AIDS; and an orphanage for children infected with the virus.
The legislation under consideration in Uganda's parliament would impose life in prison for anyone convicted of a homosexual act and could apply death sentences to sexually active gays with HIV or in cases of same-sex rape.
It has been harshly criticized by the United Nations, numerous world governments and human rights groups.
