About 3,000 homeowners received help

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A new report shows nearly 3,000 Connecticut homeowners have received direct financial relief totaling more than $184 million from a national settlement with the country's largest mortgage servicers.

State Attorney General George Jepsen said Monday an additional 868 mortgage re-financings and 696 loan modifications are still in progress. That assistance is valued at more than $72 million.

Ultimately, Jepsen said 5,000 to 6,000 Connecticut homeowners could receive relief.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Departments of Justice and Housing Urban Development and 49 state attorneys general, including Jepsen, reached an agreement with the five largest mortgage services to address abuses in loan servicing and foreclosure. A progress report on the settlement was released Monday.

The state, meanwhile, is holding its fourth forum to help distressed homeowners on Nov. 28 in Waterbury.
