WTNH) -- Police are still searching for men who are trying to get into people's homes by pretending they work for a water company.

The men entered a woman's home on Newington Road in West Hartford on Wednesday night.

"She let them in, they went down to the basement, made some story about checking to see if the water was brown. While she was down there, he said he had to check on something upstairs," Sgt. Chris Chappell, from the West Hartford Police Dept. said.

When the woman went upstairs, the man stole money from the home. The woman called police after the phony utility workers left.

And it's not just West Hartford. When you go south on Newington Road, you get to Newington, and on Tuesday, on what's called Willard Avenue, the same thing happened.

The two guys claiming to be from the water company fled in a dark grey or green van.

"Usually, if they're from the water company or gas company, they'll let you know they're coming ahead of time. Always check for credentials. Make sure they are who they say they are," Sgt. Chappell said.

MDC employees always wear clothing and drive vehicles clearly marked MDC so if you have any doubts, call the utility company or notify police.
