HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A two-year-old died after falling from a fourth story window in Hartford Saturday.

The incident happened at an apartment building located at 9 Wyllys Street. Families watched as police measured the distance of a child's fall.  The child fell from an open window four stories to the concrete below.

"My neighbor baby sat the little girl and my son used to play with her in the hallway, up and down. She is not with us anymore," Emily Gonzalez said to News 8.

On the fourth floor of the complex, where the family just moved in, News 8's Bob Wilson noticed the windows have no screens. Families try and lock the window halfway because the fall is at least 40 feet from the fourth floor and it's very difficult to watch, even for mothers to go down and help the baby on the side walk.

"So you started to go down to help," Bob Wilson asked Zenaida Rivera. "I couldn't do it, I came back up," Rivera said. "Because of my children, I can't see something like that. We are talking about a baby, an angel, you know."

Rivera is so shaken up over the death of the two-year-old girl she wants other families to know how you can keep your children safe, even if you don't have a screen.

"This comes down and you lock it like this," Rivera showed News 8.

Rivera says her landlord is bringing her screens to put in the window.

The baby was pronounced dead at Hartford Hospital.

The incident is under investigation.
