Canton, Conn. (WTNH) - A girl is suffering from critical injuries after she was hit by a car crossing Dowd Avenue in Canton, Tuesday evening, with her father. The car sped away and police are now looking for answers.

Neighbors say a red sports car, believed to be a BMW or Mercedes, flew around the corner and hit the seven-year-old girl just around 5:30 p.m.

The car did not stop, according to those on scene.

"The car did flee the scene. We are looking for any witnesses that were in the area. Only description we have at this point is a red vehicle that fled Eastbound heading toward Route 44," said Dep. Chief Donald Hull of the Canton Police Department.

A red piece of the car could be seen lying on the ground alongside the girl's shoes.

Police had closed the road with caution tape as they investigated the scene for hours.

Neighbors say it is not uncommon for cars to travel that roadway at high speeds.

"The traffic moves a little quickly around here," said Aaron Kiae of Canton.

Police say the girl remains at Hartford Hospital with critical injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Canton Police Dept. at (860) 693-0221.
