Conn. AG has questions about NY nuclear plant

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen says he opposes relicensing two nuclear reactors in Buchanan, N.Y., until a thorough investigation is conducted of longterm environmental and public safety impacts.

Jepson said Thursday he submitted written comments to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which is considering a new 20-year license for Indian Point Units 2 and 3. The reactors are about 35 miles from New York City.

Jepson said his concerns include spent fuel storage and potential threat to drinking water.

He said without a federal response plan, state and local governments could bear the financial burden of evacuating and resettling people in case of a radioactive release. Jepson said one-third of Connecticut's population, including Litchfield and Fairfield counties and the city of Bridgeport, are within 50 miles of the reactors.

The reactors are owned by Entergy Corp.
