Conn. trail to reopen after eagle eggs don't hatch

WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut environmental officials are reopening the southern end of the Windsor Locks Canal State Park Trail after the eggs in a bald eagle nest failed to hatch for unknown reasons.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection closed a portion of the trail in March to protect a pair of nesting bald eagles. It was supposed to remain closed until July 1. But DEEP announced Friday that the popular trail will be open for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Jenny Dickson, the DEEP supervising wildlife biologist, said it was unfortunate the eggs didn't hatch. She hopes the eagles will return next season and succeed.

While bald eagle numbers are increasing in Connecticut, they're still a threatened species. Nesting bald eagles returned to the state in 1993 after an absence of nearly 50 years.
