HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The proposed Connecticut State Veterans Memorial will be built in Hartford, across from the William A. O'Neill State Armory in Minuteman Park.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and other state officials made the announcement on Tuesday.

Malloy's office said it will be the state of Connecticut's first memorial honoring all Connecticut veterans, estimated at more than 1.3 million soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines.

A volunteer, non-profit organization called The Connecticut State Veterans Memorial is handling the funding, design and construction of the site. The group is currently in the planning phase for the memorial.

State Veterans Affairs Commissioner Linda Schwartz said there are more than 277,000 veterans living in Connecticut but there is no central location where ceremonies can be held on Memorial Day and Veterans Day to officially honor them.
